I see cities as living, breathing poems—sometimes beautiful, sometimes chaotic, always in need of care. As an urban planner, researcher, author, and entrepreneur, my journey has been about rethinking how we plan, feel, and protect the spaces we call home.
I founded City Pulse Pvt Ltd to turn big ideas into practical solutions—whether it’s tackling visual pollution, reimagining urban farming in the era of climate change, or creating digital tools that bring maps to life. My work isn’t just about planning—it’s about empathy mapped onto space.
Through my books—like the internationally acclaimed Visual Pollution: Concepts, Practices and Management Framework and my Urdu collection Khaam – خام– I blend research with storytelling, weaving together voices of women, youth, elders, differently-abled citizens, and all those often left unheard in our cities.

As an urban planner, traveler, and city dweller, I’ve seen firsthand that growing food in our neighborhoods is no longer a choice—it’s a necessity. With Pakistan among the most climate-vulnerable countries, shrinking farmland, and a rapidly rising urban population, urban farming is our lifeline.
This education series is my call to action: to reimagine rooftops, backyards, and vacant plots as spaces of resilience—where we fight food insecurity, adapt to climate change, and create greener, more sustainable cities together.

That realization inspired me to create Women in Urban Planning—a platform to recognize and celebrate women whose contributions go beyond routine tasks to redefine how our cities grow.
This initiative is not only about acknowledgment; it’s about connection. Through webinars, podcasts, and dialogues, I aim to bridge academia and industry, link mentors with emerging professionals, and bring women’s voices to the center of urban conversations. As an urban planner, I knew the struggle of chasing scattered master plans and reports in a country where data is scarce. Too often, our energy went into collecting information instead of creating solutions.
That’s why, with my peers at City Pulse, I launched the Pakistan Urban Portal—a one-stop, open-access hub where professionals and researchers can find vital planning documents with ease.
Read more...Sharing of data within organization or among students and presence of open source data have been persistent challenge for the developing countries like us. Most of our time, financial resources, and human capital are spent on data collection. This often leaves us with little capacity for in-depth analysis, effective policymaking, or finding solutions to real-world problems.
This is what motivated me to act. I collaborated with a group of like-minded individuals to establish a comprehensive data hub. This inspired us to build Pak GIS, a centralized repository designed to address the scarcity and challenges of reliable geospatial data. So the founding members of the CityPulse including me worked on this vision to provide an essential data resource by acquiring data from diverse international sources, local institutions, and original datasets developed by CityPulse. This platform empowers researchers, students, and organizations by giving them the foundational data needed to advance their projects and analysis.

خام داستان ہے ان شہروں کی جو آزادی کے ستتر سال بعد بھی خام ہیں، ان کرداروں کی جن کے رویے ان کے اپنے ہی معاشرے نے پختہ نہ ہونے دیے، اور انکی نوا "خام " رہی۔
خام دو حصوں پر مشتمل ہے۔ پہلا حصہ شہری منصوبہ بندی کے مسائل اور انکے حل کے لیے پیامِ عمل ہے۔ کتاب کا "حصہِ اول – شہرِ ارمان"، ہر اس شخص کو پڑھنا چاہیے جو شہری زندگی کے روزمرہ کے مسائل سے دوچار ہے اور ان کے حل کے لیے غور و فکر کرتا ہے۔ چاہے وہ طالبعلم ہو، یا پیشہ ور، کسی منصوبہ ساز ادارے سے منسلک ہو یا کسی ترقیاتی تنطیم کا حصہ، ماحولیاتی تحفظ کے کارکن ہیں یا قدرتی آفات کی روک تھام کے ادارے کے رکن۔۔۔۔ کتاب کا ہر صفحہ پلٹنے ہر آپکو خوابوں بھرے، محفوظ اور پر امن شہر بسانے کی چھوٹی چھوٹی کنجیاں ملیں گی۔ جو عمل کی راہ میں پڑے تالوں کو کھول سکتی ہیں۔
